Three bottles of Awesome Aligoté
Long thought of a bit of a workhorse grape in Burgundy, traditionally producing such poor quality wine that it was blended with cassis to make the Kir Aperetif. Winemakers are now slowly realising what you can achieve with the grape if you keep the yields low, and really take care producing the wine, so much so that top-producer Aligote has now become sought-after in the wine world. It's fair to say Aligote is having a bit of a moment right now, so we've got together three of our favourite Bourgogne Aligoté, showcasing the best of this lately venerable variety.
The wines below would pair perfectly with a deliciously simple lunch of goat's cheese, charcuterie and fresh tomato salad.
2020 Smith-Chapel
22.00 > 19.80
Domaine Smith Chapel are a husband and wife team based in Beaujolais. We already stock their Fleurie, which is a must-try, and we fell instantly in love with this when we tasted it. It’s so alive and charming on the nose, there’s zesty citrus fruit, and a real saline quality that just makes it incredibly moreish and hard to put down!
2018 Bernard Moreau
Bernard Moreau are based in Chassagne-Montrachet and produce some of the world’s finest white Burgundies - their 1er cru Chassagnes can go for upwards of three figures. Here they produce a wonderful rendition of Aligote. It reminds me of Chablis, very crisp, elegant, and stony. There’s lovely zesty fruit and enough texture to keep it interesting.
2018 Goisot
19.00 > 17.10
We've had Goisot on 'by the glass' at the bar for a while now and its been extremely popular for good reason. The 2018 is showing so well at the moment, it's a little richer than the other two - think Pear skins, fresh almonds and jasmine. It's lovely and creamy with the trademark freshness of Aligote coming through on the finish.
