Valtuille, Cesar Marquez

Cesar Marquez is from the legendary Perez family who have been making wine in this region for centuries. His own project focuses on super-old vines and making terroir-specific wines from different parcels.

I often describe the Mencia grape as a Spanish take on Pinot Noir – but here it is slightly more fuller-bodied – and the fruit is a little more like plums and cherry than strawberry. The wine has some beautiful aromatics, it’s floral, very elegant with those plum and cherry notes in the foreground. There’s a bit of spice, lovely freshness, and a velvet-like texture on the palate.

The grapes for this wine come from eighty-year-old vines in the village of Valtuille where there is a high sandstone content in the soil. According to Cesar this gives freshness and a floral side to the wines compared to his vineyards on schist and granite where the tannins are more powerful and the wine has more structure.
